Damn the man! Save the Empire!

No, I don’t mean Star Wars.  I’m talking about Empire Records, one of my absolutely favorite music movies of all time! It’s about a group of kids working in a record store.  It doesn’t get much cooler than that!  Who hasn’t wanted to do that at some time in their lives?  You’ve got the artistic guy, the troubled girl, the smart girl, the slut, the stoner, and of course Mr. Mysterious, all working for what has to be the greatest boss EVER!!!  As if that weren’t enough, it’s Rex Manning day (Rex Manning being the washed up sex symbol still desperately trying to hold on to any appeal he once had).  Throw in a shoplifter named Warren Beatty and this movie has everything.  Above all, the soundtrack will blow your mind!  Music is the key ingredient that makes this movie what it is as this group of misfit kids join forces to save the Empire Records store from being taken over by Musictown.  DAMN THE MAN! SAVE THE EMPIRE!

Following are a few of my favorite musical excerpts from the movie.  In this first clip, it has come to attention of the other employees that Lucas (Mr. Mysterious) had stolen the money from the deposit and gone to Atlantic City with it.  It contains one of the best (in my opinion) versions of the song “Money” and it’s by The Flying Lizards.

This next scene is the shoplifting scene and makes me laugh every time.  “Attention Rex Manning fans, to your right you’ll see a shoplifter being chased by night manager, Lucas.  He will be caught, deep-fried in a vat of oil and served to our first hundred customers.  Just another tasty treat from the gang at Empire Records! ”  It features the song Ready, Steady, Go by The Meices.

The last scene I’ll share (since there’s a ton and I don’t want to give the whole movie away)  is the one in which Joe (the greatest boss ever) has had it with the goings on in the store and takes it out on his drumset.  (See?  Don’t you wish you had a boss like that?)  Of course, it can magically be pumped to share through the entire store…and….it’s AC/DC.  Doesn’t get much better than that.

So, if you haven’t seen Empire Records and are looking for some good, mindless entertainment, go out and get it.  If you have seen it, but not in a while, how come?  Just watch it again.  You know you want to!
